How can I tell If my Hard Drive is Failing?

  Hard drive failure can be a reality of lifestyle. Unfortunately, nearly all Hard drives will eventually fail at some point. Sometimes they fail with out any warning, you merely flip on your computer and it will not boot or you get the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death" that signals a catastrophic problem with your Hard drive.

But often, your computer will give you delicate or not so delicate signs that your hard drive is almost to the end of the line. Some of the mechanical components in your hard drive can fail gradually, and throughout this process there will be indications that all is not well with your computer. If you can acknowledge these signs early on, you might be able to back up your information and transfer it to a new drive before your system completely fails.

Here are some of the most typical signs that you are about to have a serious problem.

Uncommon Clicking and Grinding Noises.

This is a typical sign of a mechanical failure, generally involving the drive's read/write heads. If you are familiar with the inner workings of your computer, you could power down the computer, disconnect the suspect drive, then flip the computer back on and listen to find out if it's making the exact same noise. If you are still getting the exact same clicking noise with your hard drive disengaged, then the hard drive is not the problem. You'll need a computer technician to diagnose your computer and find the real problem.

Unfortunately, the most likely scenario is that the noise is coming from your hard drive, in which case you should immediately back up your information and change the drive. This is a problem that is only going to rapidly get worse with time and there is no practical way to fix the drive once it's in this situation.

Files Suddenly Go Missing From Your Computer.

If you start mysteriously dropping information, or your information show a bunch of "gibberish" interspersed with readable text, this could be a sign that there are gradually failing locations of the drive.  Also numerous "file not found or corrupted" errors start happening.   At this point, try to save as much information as you can because failure could be eminent.  This can also be brought on by virus issues or malware so it is important to have this issue checked by a professional.  A professional computer shop may also software tools like HDD Regenerator or Victoria Hard Drive diagnostics that can diagnose and possibly band aid the drive to recover some files.  Remapping and regeneration software will not fix the drive but they may give you an opportunity to save your important information before the impending total failure.

Your Computer Slows to a Snail's Tempo.

An additional typical sign of a failing drive is that the computer starts to running extremely. Accessing your information takes for ever. As when you start dropping information, this is a sign that your computer requires many passes an attempt before it can successfully retrieve any information. This can be a very clear sign that drive failure is imminent.  However, again this can also be brought on by virus issues or malware so it is important to have this issue checked by a professional.

Your Computer Frequently "Locks Up" During the Booting Procedure.

All computers exhibit this problem once in a while, and if it's a uncommon occurrence, there is no need for concern. The real problem is when this begins to occur on an increasingly regular foundation. If you start to discover that your computer often locks up throughout booting, this is generally a sign that complete failure is not far away.

The computer does not acknowledge your difficult drive when booting.

This is a typical sign that your hard drive has totally failed, but it might also might be a problem with the method configuration. When you attempt to boot the computer, you will get an error  saying that BIOS (basic input/output system) failed to find any boot media. You'll likely need a computer technician to fully diagnose this problem, but most often it's the result of a failed drive.

The Blue Screen of Death (nicknamed BSOD).

The much more you attempt to use your computer in this state, the much more likely you are to overwrite your information - which will cause it to be permanently misplaced.

Once a hard drive is completely lost, the recovery process involve the drive being disassembled in a sterile environment and the magmatic platters removed.  This procedure is only done in limited places nationwide and cost more money than most people make in a few years.  Bottom line is to back up often and if you start experiencing problems, see a professional.
