What is the best antivirus?

It is a question that has been asked since the first computer virus code was written and then discovered.  What is the best antivirus software?  There is really no right answer.  The correct response is what is your objective?  If you want good general antivirus protection, there are many options available.  If you want an antivirus that will lockdown your system very tightly, there are a few of those available.  You need to be aware however that there is a trade off.  Extreme lockdown security will bog down your computer performance.  Even the simplest of everyday task will run at a snails pace. If you want maximum performance but still want some virus coverage or if you own an older system that needs some protection but is almost unusable with most antivirus programs,  there is one available for that.  No matter what antivirus you choose, there is no substitute for safe computer and internet practices.

Recommendations:

Lockdown Antivirus (performance effecting)

  • McAfee Total Protection  (Paid)

General everyday

  • Avast Antivirus (Free)

  • Norton AntiVirus  (Paid)

Light or older equipment

  • Clamwin (Free, no real time protection but does daily scans at user set time)

Additionally, check with your internet service provider.  Many of them offer free or reduced price antivirus software for their users.
